• A Responsive Refresh

    Just seven months ago I introduced the second version of my portfolio site. Last time, I was inspired to update after reading two books, and this time is no different. After reading Dan Cederholm’s Handcrafted CSS, and Ethan Marcotte’s article, Responsive Web Design I was once again inspired to update my site. But rather than call this update a “complete over-haul”, I have refreshed the site using principles highlighted in Cederholm’s book and Marcotte’s article.

    Put simply, my site is now “responsive”. The term “responsive web design” was coined by Ethan Marcotte and is all about making your site able to handle any environment it’s put in and feel as if it belonged there all along. Now, no matter the size of the browser window, or the size of a device’s screen, my site will thrive.

  • A Revamping: MattSafian.com v2

    Over the holidays, I received a copy of Dan Cederholm’s CSS3 for Web Designers and Jeremy Keith’s HTML5 for Web Designers, the first two installments of a series of books from A Book Apart, aimed at “people who make websites” (to quote their tagline.) After reading through the two books, I was inspired to re-code my website from the bottom up using some of the new techniques explained in the books. And while the project began as a simple re-coding meant to visually look the same as the original design, it more and more became a complete over-haul of the site. I decided to take this re-coding as an opportunity to fix things in the old site that I felt could be redone in a way to make the site experience better.
